During the pandemic, New York Music Month Extended Play gives fans a way to tune into New York’s one-of-a-kind music scene safely from their homes. Learn to create your own music or record a podcast. Hear from up-and-coming NYC artists and join in discussions with other fans – all for FREE. This January through June, get tuned in with New York Music Month Extended Play!

    The Art of Podcasting Building Beats

    Everyone has a story to tell.

    Explore the ever-growing medium of podcasting from generating ideas & conducting interviews to marketing & getting sponsored. These 8 workshops will give you the tools and inspiration to create podcasts that captivate and engage. The technical aspect of the workshops will be taught using Soundtrap, a free cloud-based podcasting & audio editing platform, though the concepts and practices taught in these workshops will be applicable no matter which editing platform you choose to use.

    No experience is necessary and all stories welcome.

    Explore the Beat Building Beats

    Jump into the world of beat-making and digital music production.

    Workshops are open to all, whether you are a curious beginner with limited resources looking to to hone in on foundational skills or a seasoned professional hoping to expand your creative toolbox and find new workflows. Dive into a variety of practices and techniques used to create unique digital productions from ideation to release and performance.

    Each of 8 workshops will inspire you to be innovative with the resources that surround you and challenge you to think outside the box.

    Michael Mwenso: Hope, Resist & Heal in association with MOME Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage Anywhere

    Musician, artist and social commentator Michael Mwenso offers his unique and ancestral perspective on Black music and its power to heal us. As an African born queer man growing up in London and New York, Mwenso and an acclaimed journalist dive into a wide range of his own discoveries while shedding light on the Black experience through interludes of his own music.  This live studio recording with Mwenso and the Shakes and commentary will take us on a ride through the continuum and power of Black roots music.

    Creating Electronic Music with Everyday Sounds Izzi Ramkissoon

    In this introductory hands-on workshop with instructor Izzi Ramkissoon, Electronic Music Program at the College of Staten Island, participants will learn about how to create music using everyday sound in the style of musique concrete.  In the workshop attendees will learn about this history of musique concrete, listen to examples, record sounds using a computer or phone, edit and process sounds using free software (audacity), create a piece of music that can be shared after the workshop.

    KAYE – “Conscious Control” Music Video Showcase New York Foundation for the Arts

    New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is pleased to present a series of events showcasing new recordings, music videos, and panel discussions with industry professionals to celebrate women-identifying artists and recipients of the NYC Women’s Fund for Media, Music and Theatre.

    KAYE (Charlene Kaye) will showcase her new music video for single “Conscious Control” on NYFA’s Instagram. Conscious Control was funded by MOME initiative, NYC Women’s Fund for Media. Music and Theatre. Kaye is a singer-songwriter and former front woman of critically acclaimed group San Fermin, with whom Kaye has played network television and has toured with St. Vincent, Arctic Monkeys, and alt-J.

Episode two features Coast, a Queens-based, independent, Alternative/Rock band with members hailing from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the US. The band embodies a sound that is reflective of their multi-cultural upbringing in a global city.

    Club 300: Unplugged, created by music executive and music- industry visionary, Kevin Liles, is a LIVE-music series created during the pandemic and dedicated to independent artists. These special NY Music Month Extended Play episodes were recorded at the legendary SMASH STUDIOS in Midtown Manhattan. Episode three features Lonr., a 23-year-old Grammy Award-winning songwriter, rapper, singer who resides in Brooklyn NY. He wrote and collaborated with international, R&B star H.E.R, and made appearances on BET, MTV, Revolt, etc. For his special Club 300 Unplugged performance he was backed by Rock/Alternative band Night Coast.

    Club 300: Unplugged, created by music executive and music- industry visionary, Kevin Liles, is a LIVE-music series created during the pandemic and dedicated to independent artists. These special NY Music Month Extended Play episodes were recorded at the legendary SMASH STUDIOS in Midtown Manhattan. NYC is the birthplace of Hip Hop and episode four features Hip Hop with a live band. A line-up of emerging voices from across NYC provides a glimpse into what NYC sounds like. This episode highlights female rapper and poet Lish Speaks, melodic singer/rapper Michael from the East, Inspirational rapper D.Daily, and Brooklyn-based lyrist, KAS.

    Haitian Flag Day feat. Gabel and Nancy St Leger Dance Company Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage Anywhere

    In celebration of Haitian Flag Day, SummerStage is partnering with the Rhythm Foundation and New York Music Month Extended Play to livestream a concert featuring popular Haitian kompa group Gabel and Nancy St Leger Dance Company, directly from the newly renovated North Beach Bandshell in South Florida. The event will include a limited in-person audience and follow all the proper safety guidelines and protocols.
