June 27
6:00 – 9:00 PM
MoCADA Culture Lab II at L1010 Lafayette Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11217

For this special Black Music Month / New York Music Month event The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art (MoCADA) teams up with the Peabody award-winning public radio program Afropop Worldwide and local radio partner WNYE for a night of music and discussion.

We welcome Brooklyn-based East – African retro-pop outfit Alsarah & The Nubatones for a live performance, and a conversation with Afropop's host Georges Collinet to discuss the importance of increasing the profile of African and African diaspora music worldwide on the radio. We'll talk about the benefits these artists, music industry professionals, and the countries that produce the music see from the impact and exposure of support on independent stations in North America and beyond, as well as what can be done to support these stations and this mission.

This year, New York Music Month and co-sign launch Radio City, a series celebrating one of New York City’s most essential resources — independent non-commercial radio stations. All throughout June, some of NYC’s finest stations - WFMU, WFUV, WKCR, WNYC, WNYE, The Lot Radio -  will host FREE events with community partners to re-introduce themselves to the city, share their mission and musical identities, and educate artists on avenues of access to airplay and music fans on exposure to the airwaves.
